Overview

An enormous curved facade fronts this large five-star located in the northwestern Beijing district of Haidian. The hotel largely draws guests in town for conferences or business, but is also excellent value for tourists. Situated roughly halfway between the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City, visitors are a little over a half-an-hour by taxi from either, traffic permitting, and about 40 minutes from the airport (give yourself at least an hour, just to be safe).

The amenities are quite up to date, including the two executive floors that offer extra services to business travelers. There are several solid restaurants, both Chinese and international, and a shopping arcade makes on-the-spot purchases a breeze. An added attraction for visitors with some extra time is a reputed entrance to part of Beijing's famous Underground City, dug out beneath the capital during the Cold War in case of a nuclear attack.

I stayed here for a week last fall and am gladly returning to stay again this summer. A comfortable hotel with all the amenities I needed and helpful staff with a good command of English. For roughly $120 per night US (including a decent breakfast), it's a great deal. As for location, it could be a problem for some, though the relative peace and quiet of this part of town is welcome after a day in the middle of downtown chaos. A taxi to the city center (Tiananmen Square area) takes about 20-30 minutes in (always) bad traffic. But then again, cabs in Beijing are very cheap...It's about an $8-9 fare and cabs are ready out front 24/7. Another solution is to cab to the nearby metro, avoiding too much traffic (though you should be prepared for crowds... but what else is new in Beijing?).

Among all the five-star hotels in Beijing, this one seems to enjoy a steady popularity among my friends and me. No serious complaints. Nice stay every time, very convenient.
